February 13, 2021 Coalition for the Homeless By Coalition for the Homeless NEW YORK, NY — The following statement from Giselle Routhier, Policy Director at Coalition for the Homeless was released today in response to the attacks that took place in the NYC subway stations on February 12 and 13, 2021. “These devastating attacks are a reminder that failing to offer the dignity and safety of a real home, or at minimum a safe and private room during this historic pandemic, is literally a matter of life and death. This incredible tragedy could have been prevented. In 2019, didn’t our elected leaders commit to never let such vicious crimes like the murders in Chinatown happen again? That it has is unconscionable. Mayor de Blasio and Governor Cuomo need to respond not with more stigmatization and callousness toward people without homes, or heavy-handed police removals, but with real and immediate access to housing for unsheltered New Yorkers.”
