GCFP Volunteer: Vanessa

When my best friend lost her battle with cancer, I was completely lost. I was doing some volunteering in my town, but when she got sick it was all about her. After she lost her battle, I needed to fill the space of loss and decided to join the Grand Central Food Program (GCFP). My night of choice is Tuesday, as it was a Tuesday when she left this world. She lost her battle with life, but in her honor, I attempt to go out in the vans and save a life — one soup at a time.

I love how the GCFP treats and cares for it’s volunteers. I also love how many wonderful people I have met from around the world! My closest friends have become those who I have met doing this.

My advice to someone who wants to volunteer with the GCFP would be to simply just do it! It is fun. It is tiring. But when the goal is achieved, the satisfaction is amazing. You’ll also get the bug and once you volunteer for one thing, I guarantee you’ll volunteer for a lot of other things too!

We keep New York strong — one soup at a time.
