It made me stop in my tracks during what was an otherwise routine shelter visit. Once I was able to hold the 4-year-old girl, calm her, help her name her stuffed animal (the lion became “Lucy” over the course of the morning), I learned why she was so upset. Later, as she finally ate a small hamburger and apple slices for lunch, child care staff at East River Family Center, the homeless shelter where she lives, filled me in on more of her story.
