NYC to Eliminate Cash Bail for Some Defendants

Thousands of people awaiting trial in New York City for some low-level offenses will be released to community supervision programs rather than detained in jails under an initiative to be announced Wednesday eliminating cash bail for certain defendants.

The $17.8-million program, supported by $13.8 million in asset forfeiture funds from the Manhattan district attorney’s office and $4 million from the city, aims to reduce unnecessary jail time for thousands of defendants detained each year because they can’t afford bail, officials said.
