Posted on October 10, 2012 by DAVID OBELE “I’m homeless, and I vote!” It’s been almost 20 years since the Coalition won the right to vote for New Yorkers living on the streets, but many homeless people remain disenfranchised. So for the last six weeks, Coalition staff, interns and a small army of volunteers have distributed over 1500 registration forms (including 250 in foreign languages) to those living in shelters, on the streets and visiting the Coalition’s Fulton Street office. We want to remind people that it’s important to register to vote, but – more importantly – thattheir vote matters. In the week leading up to the November election, we will visit all 72 singles shelters to remind people to vote November 6th. We’ll have posters and will be distributing directions to the nearest polling place. We appreciate the members of our Client Advisory Board for all of the hard work that they’ve done since this summer to make our “Get Out The Homeless Vote” campaign one of the biggest and most effective in the country. At the Coalition we believe that every vote counts, no matter where you sleep tonight.
