Posted on September 24, 2012 by GISELLE ROUTHIER The number of homeless men, women, and children living in shelter is over 45,000—a record high. The number of shelters in the City is up to 234. The average length of stay in shelters is at 337 days, up three months over last year. All around, the indicators measuring homelessness in New York City are painting a picture of a problem getting worse, not better. The Mayor’s Management Report, released last week, keeps track of all these data points and is meant to hold the City accountable. But sadly, the Bloomberg administration is offering no solutions in the way of permanent housing for homeless families. Without this critical piece, we cannot expect the situation to get any better. The solution to homelessness, in the end, must be homes.
